The City's bulky pickup lists mattresses and box springs as eligible for households that already get City garbage service and schedule it; the details are on the where-your-junk-goes page. If it is not infested and you can get it out of the bedroom to a Full-Service Disposal & Recycling Center yourself, Mecklenburg County's fee sheet prices a Mattress Set as one Group 1 drop.
To have a local hauler take a mattress, text or email a photo to (704) 459-5052 or quotes@704junk.com. We make the referral.
Your hauler confirms the final price on-site before anything is loaded. See the full 2026 guide for a detailed breakdown of what goes into the price.
A single mattress or a single box spring starts from $95. Ask your hauler what the price includes.
A mattress and a box spring, or a mattress with other furniture, is several pieces. Several pieces are estimated as one job, not by adding up item prices. Text a photo for a rough quote.
Stairs above the main floor add $30 per flight. Your hauler confirms the final price on-site before anything is loaded.
Yes, if your household gets City of Charlotte garbage service: the City's bulky pickup lists mattresses and box springs as eligible, and the pickup has to be scheduled. The City's rules on timing and placement are quoted on the where-your-junk-goes page.
If the mattress is upstairs, or you'd rather not move it to the curb, text a photo.
Yes. A box spring also starts from $95. Several pieces are estimated as one job, not by adding up item prices.
Headboards, dressers, nightstands, and other bedroom furniture can go in the same request. If you're turning over a guest room or clearing out an estate, let us know the full scope when you send your photo and we'll pass it along.
Junk can legally go to a donation center, a recycler, or a county disposal center, depending on the item. Ask your hauler where it's going.
If the reason that mattress is leaving the bedroom is bed bugs, or if you want to know whether you can drop a Mattress Set at the county yourself, read the EPA and county notes on this page before you load it into a car.
EPA's bed-bug instructions, the one furniture category EPA could measure recovery for, and Mecklenburg County's one-item Mattress Set drop-off.
Federal — EPA on bed bugs: eliminate if you can; discard responsibly if you cannot. EPA's position is not "throw it out." EPA says not to discard furniture if you can safely eliminate the bed bugs from it. When you cannot, EPA writes: “Discard furniture responsibly if you can’t safely eliminate the bed bugs.”
Responsible means destroying it so nobody re-uses it, then getting it collected promptly. EPA's destroy instruction is: “Destroy it so someone else won't be tempted to bring it into their home.” The method EPA lists: “Rip covers and remove stuffing from furniture items.” EPA also says to mark discarded furniture so the next person can see it had bed bugs (paraphrased). Then EPA writes: “Have infested items picked up as soon as possible by the trash collection agency.” That is a prompt trash-collection pickup, not a drive across town with an infested mattress in a car.
The alternative to discarding is a sealed cover. EPA writes: “Purchase protective covers that seal mattresses and box springs.” Why they work, in EPA's words: “With covers that seal, the bed bugs will get trapped inside and die.” If you can keep the mattress and seal it, that is the path EPA puts first.
Quoted from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Do-It-Yourself Bed Bug Control: Do-It-Yourself Bed Bug Control (epa.gov), fetched September 17, 2026, HTTP 200. This is federal bed-bug guidance. It is not a Mecklenburg County drop-off price, not a City of Charlotte curbside rule, and not a hauling service. Checked September 2026.Federal data — mattresses are the one furniture category EPA could measure recovery for. A mattress is not a sofa in the federal dataset. EPA's durable-goods page, covering furniture and furnishings, says recovery of wood, textiles and metals may be occurring, but that “no measurable data source was accessible, with the exception of mattresses”. That fragment is EPA's: across the whole category, mattresses are the exception EPA could measure at all.
The sources EPA cites for that furniture-and-furnishings table: “Sources: Department of Commerce, International Sleep Products Association and Mattress Recycling Council.” EPA names the Mattress Recycling Council as a data source. That is a checkable reason a mattress is different from a sofa. It is not a claim that your mattress will be recycled, not a Mecklenburg County drop-off rule, and not a recycling rate for furniture as a whole — EPA could not get measurable recovery data for the category's wood, textiles and metals except for mattresses.
Quoted from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Durable Goods: Product-Specific Data: Durable Goods: Product-Specific Data (epa.gov), fetched September 17, 2026, HTTP 200. This is federal product-specific data. It is not a Mecklenburg County drop-off price, not a City of Charlotte curbside rule, and not a hauler's recycling rate. Checked September 2026. Figures are as published on that page.County drop-off — a Mattress Set is one Group 1 item on the resident-sticker tier. If it is not infested and you can get it out of the bedroom to a Full-Service Disposal & Recycling Center yourself, Mecklenburg County's fee sheet prices a Mattress Set as one Group 1 drop: “1 large bulky item; such as a sofa, or a chair, or a table or Mattress Set.” The county lists mattresses in bulky waste: “Non-spoilable items that may include furniture, couches, tables, mattresses, etc.”
That free tier is the resident-sticker column. The Blue Rectangle Mecklenburg County resident sticker is free and has no expiration. The four Full-Service Recycling Centers on that sheet are Foxhole, Hickory Grove, North Mecklenburg and Compost Central. More than one item moves the whole load to $15/unit, and a unit on that sheet is a load, not an item.
North Carolina has no state mattress rule or landfill ban; the rules that apply here are federal guidance and a county fee schedule. This is a drop-off you drive, for a clean Mattress Set — not the EPA bed-bug path, and not a hauler's pickup. If the mattress has bed bugs, read the first note before you load it into a car. Use the county's Where Can I Recycle page for where and when; use the linked PDF for what it costs.

This is the county's Group 1 line for a Mattress Set on the resident-sticker tier. It is not a hauler's price, not a bed-bug protocol, and not a curbside pickup. Checked September 2026. We couldn't find a published City of Charlotte rule on putting a cut-up mattress in the garbage cart, so we won't guess. Ask the City's solid waste service before you cut one up. That depends on the dumpster company. Ask whether mattresses are allowed and whether they cost extra before you load one. The questions to ask any dumpster company are on the cost page. If you'd rather not handle it, text a photo for a rough quote.
