Mecklenburg County disposal rules

That structure in the back yard has to come apart before it can leave. The county already named the debris.

A rotting shed, a spa that has not run in years, and an above-ground pool that came down after one more winter are the same job to the person standing in the yard: a large structure that will not fit through the gate until it is taken apart. Once it is in pieces, Mecklenburg County treats that material as construction-and-demolition debris — not as a couch. This page gives the county rule that actually governs that pile, and where to read it yourself. We connect you with an independent local hauler. Your hauler will get back to you with a rough quote.

This is not a demolition company page. Ask your hauler whether it takes the structure apart. Permits, utility disconnects, and knocking down a building are someone else's job — and a live electrical connection on a spa is an electrician's.

Once it is in pieces, the county does not call it bulky

Most people who look up shed removal charlotte nc are not shopping for a carpenter. They have a structure that has to come down and then go somewhere, and the somewhere is the part the listings skip. Mecklenburg County Solid Waste already answered it, in public, on its own FAQ.

From Mecklenburg County's own FAQ, and from its residential fee schedule. Asked what counts as construction-and-demolition waste at the county drop-off centers, the county answers: items such as dimensional lumber, plywood, windows, and doors that come from the construction or tear down of a structure. A backyard shed taken apart is that kind of load. Separately, the county's residential fee schedule for July 2026 through June 2027 states a maximum delivery of 14 cubic yards to a full-service center; larger loads must go directly to Foxhole Landfill. Sources: Mecklenburg County Solid Waste, “What is considered C & D waste at Mecklenburg County’s Drop-off Centers?” (wipeoutwaste.mecknc.gov/faq); and Mecklenburg County residential fees, FY July 2026 – June 2027, Residential-Fees.pdf (mecknc.widen.net), the line “Maximum delivery: 14yd3 to Full Service Facility. Larger loads must go directly to Foxhole Landfill.” Checked September 2026. These are Mecklenburg County rules at county facilities, not City of Charlotte curbside rules.

That 14-cubic-yard cap is the figure printed on the current residential schedule. Older write-ups of this program sometimes said ten. The PDF in force today says fourteen, so that is the number this page uses.

The same shape of job shows up when the object is a spa sitting on a deck it will not come off in one piece, or an above-ground wall kit that is already down. The material is wood, liner, frame, and fixtures from taking a structure apart. The county's word for that, at its drop-off centers, is C&D.

The scale does not bill shed boards like a sofa

If you are thinking about a DIY run to a county center, the question is not “is the dump free?” The question is what the attendant classifies the load as. Household bulky and construction debris sit on the same sheet and they are not the same rate.

From the county's published residential fee schedule. At Mecklenburg County's full-service disposal and recycling centers, a resident's extra bulky items are billed at $15 per unit. Construction and demolition debris on that same schedule is $25 per unit. The one-item freebie on the sheet is written for a sofa, a chair, a table, or a mattress set — not for C&D. Source: Mecklenburg County residential fees, FY July 2026 – June 2027 schedule (document code FY-27-002), Residential-Fees.pdf (mecknc.widen.net). Checked September 2026. County facility pricing; not a City of Charlotte collection fee.

So the boards, doors, and plywood from taking the shed apart are the $25 column, not the $15 column. A pickup with more than a couple of units, or anything that has to be weighed, is a different arithmetic again — trailers over eight feet and all shingle loads are weighed, on that same sheet. The honest DIY case is still real: one small, sorted, well-secured load, one trip, and you may be ahead. A whole structure is usually several trips, a trailer you may not own, and a classification you cannot talk the attendant out of.

Not worth the arithmetic? Text the details.

An unsecured load can add half again at the scale

The third rule is the one that turns a carefully budgeted DIY trip into an argument at the booth. It is printed on the county's non-residential fee schedule, in the same words the residential schedule uses, and it applies to any vehicle that enters a county facility.

From the county's non-residential fee schedule, quoted. “Uncovered/Unsecured Loads: All fees may be increased by 50% for any and all vehicles that enter County facilities with an uncovered or unsecured load.” Source: Mecklenburg County non-residential fees, FY July 2026 – June 2027, Non-Residential-Fees.pdf (mecknc.widen.net). The sentence is printed on that document. Checked September 2026. A county facility rule, not a city ordinance.

A trailer of shed boards with no tarp, or a spa shell that is only sitting in the bed, is the picture that sentence is for. The surcharge is optional in the wording — “may be increased” — which is not the same as “will not be.” If you go yourself, strap it and cover it.

Taking it apart: what to ask a local hauler

Ask a local hauler whether it takes a shed or an above-ground pool apart so it can be loaded. Permits, utility disconnects, and knocking down a building are not hauling. Structural demolition is a different trade, and this page does not sell it.

A spa is the one that most often has a live wire still attached. If the unit is still electrically connected, that disconnect is an electrician's job. Tell us when you reach out whether it is still plugged in.

The search that goes with a deck-mounted spa is hot tub removal charlotte, and the problem behind it is the deck itself: the unit will not come off in one piece. The path is narrow, and the electrical question comes first. The access problem is the same as the shed's, and so is the disposal classification once it is in pieces.

If you searched for above ground pool removal charlotte, the liner and wall are usually already down. What is left is panels, frame, and liner, not household bulky. An in-ground shell is excavation.

The backyard structure is why people find this page. The full item list and the published rate card are on the home page.

What cannot go

For safety and county rules, your hauler can't take wet paint, oils, fuels, chemicals, asbestos, medical or biohazard waste, or ammunition.

If part of the pile is on that list and the rest is a structure that can come apart, tell us when you reach out. There is more on where household junk can go in the Mecklenburg County disposal explainer.

Five things worth settling first

The structure itself, what the county drop-off will charge, and what to ask a local hauler.

Is this only for sheds, spas, and pools?

No. We also take requests for furniture, mattresses, appliances, garage and estate cleanouts, attic clutter, yard waste. A backyard structure is one job on that list. The rate card and the item list are on the home page.

The spa is still wired. Who unplugs it?

An electrician. If you are not sure whether it is still live, say so when you text the photo.

Can I just take the pieces to a county center myself?

Sometimes, yes, if the load is small, sorted, and strapped. Mecklenburg County's residential schedule bills C&D at $25 per unit against $15 for extra bulky items, caps a delivery to a full-service center at 14 cubic yards (larger loads go to Foxhole Landfill), and may add 50% if the load is uncovered. Those figures are on the county's published fee sheets, checked September 2026. A whole structure is usually more than one trip in a pickup.

Who handles demolition or a permit?

Usually a contractor: structural demolition, building permits, and utility disconnects are not hauling. If the job is a house coming down, you need a demolition contractor.

What about an in-ground pool?

An in-ground shell is excavation and often permitting. Above-ground walls, liners, and frames come apart.
